He was a French playwright, an actor, and a poet. He wrote many types of plays, including comedies and musical comedies. Some of these were called comédie-ballets, which mixed drama with dance and song. His work was so important that people often call the French language the "language of Molière." Today, his plays are performed at the Comédie-Française more than any other writer's plays.

His stories have been translated into every major living language.

To become a great writer, Molière had to learn many different skills. He started by traveling for thirteen years as an actor. During this time, he polished his ability to be funny. He combined a style called Commedia dell'arte with refined French comedy. Commedia dell'arte is an Italian style that uses improvisation, or acting without a script.

He also learned to write full, five-act comedies in verse. Later, he focused on musical comedies where songs and dances interrupted the drama. He even studied the techniques of other actors to improve his craft.

Molière was born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in Paris on 15 January 1622.

He grew up in a wealthy family. His father held a royal job as a valet of the King's chamber. Molière studied at the prestigious Collège de Clermont, which was a very strict school. At age 21, he decided to leave his life of office to join the theatre. He used 630 livres to help found a group called the Illustre Théâtre. He even used a stage name, Molière, to protect his father from the shame of having an actor in the family.

His career saw great success and many hard challenges. In 1658, he performed for King Louis XIV at the Louvre. Because of this, he became part of the "Troupe du Roi," or the King's Troupe. He found success in Paris with plays like The Affected Ladies and The School for Wives. However, his plays sometimes caused trouble with powerful groups. His play Tartuffe was criticized by the Catholic Church, and his play Dom Juan had to be withdrawn. He worked so hard that his health suffered, and he had to take a break in 1667.

Molière's life ended while he was doing the work he loved. In 1673, he was performing in his final play, The Imaginary Invalid. He played a character named Argan, who was a hypochondriac, or someone worried about being sick. During the show, he had a bad coughing fit and a hemorrhage. He finished the performance, but he collapsed and died a few hours later.

Even though he died, his influence lives on through his many famous characters and stories.
