He was a master of the stage and the opera house. Scribe is best known for writing "well-made plays," or *pièces bien faites*. These stories were built with very neat and tidy plots. Instead of focusing on deep thoughts, they focused on exciting events. His main goal was always to entertain the public. This approach made his work a mainstay of the theatre for over 100 years.

Writing for the stage was a busy job for Scribe. He often worked with many different partners to get things done. In fact, he worked with more than 60 co-authors during his career. He also wrote over 130 stage works all by himself. One special trick he used was called *quiproquo*. This is when characters misunderstand a word or a situation. They think they agree, but they actually mean different things. This mistake creates lots of drama and excitement for the audience.

Scribe's journey to success took many years of hard work. He was born in Paris to a middle-class family. His mother wanted him to become a lawyer. He even studied law with a famous Parisian lawyer named Louis-Ferdinand Bonnet. However, Scribe loved the theatre more than the law. He started writing plays while he was still a teenager. His very first play in 1810 was not a success. He had to rely on his own money for several years. It was not until 1815 that he became truly successful.

Music and Scribe went hand in hand for a long time. He wrote librettos, which are the words for an opera. He worked with 48 different composers to make music. One of his most important partners was Daniel Auber. They worked together for 41 years and created 39 operas. They even wrote *La Muette de Portici* in 1828. This was the first French grand opera. He also worked with famous names like Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi. His words helped make grand opera a huge part of French life.

Scribe's influence reached far beyond the borders of France. His ideas about how to build a story changed theatre forever. For example, his ballet story *La Somnambule* was used to make a famous opera. His work with the composer Meyerbeer helped spread grand opera to many countries. By 1835, the opera *Robert le diable* had been seen in 77 different houses. Scribe was also a very successful businessman. He made a large fortune and lived in a beautiful mansion. He was also very kind to others in his field. He gave 13,000 francs every year to help musicians in need.
