He lived in Paris during the 1800s. Halévy had two different jobs at once. He worked as a civil servant for the government. He also wrote many plays, stories, and novels. He was born on January 1, 1834. His family was very artistic and musical. His uncle was even a famous composer named Fromental Halévy. This background likely helped him love the arts.

Halévy often wrote with other people. He had a very famous partnership with his friend Henri Meilhac. They met at school and shared a dislike for school life. They were very different from each other. Meilhac was lively and fanciful in his ideas. Halévy was more serious and worked like a careful craftsman. Some say Meilhac wrote the main plot ideas. Then, Halévy would fill them in with witty dialogue.

In the beginning, Halévy was quite cautious. He used a fake name, Jules Servières, for some early work. He did this so his government job would not be affected. He worked with the composer Jacques Offenbach using this name. One of their early shows was called Madame Papillon. It opened at the Bouffes-Parisiens on October 3, 1855. Later, he used his real name for the show Ba-ta-clan. He eventually stopped using a fake name altogether.

Halévy and Meilhac had many big successes in the 1860s. They wrote many comic operas with Jacques Offenbach. These included La belle Hélène in 1864 and La vie parisienne in 1866. They also wrote La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein in 1867. One of their most famous works was the opera Carmen. This was a tragedy with music by Georges Bizet. It was a different kind of story for them. Even though it had small audiences, it is very famous today.

Halévy received many honors for his great writing skills. In 1881, he was elected to the Académie française. This is a very important group for French writers. He also became an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1890. He retired from his work in 1882. Halévy died in Paris on May 8, 1908. His life shows how someone can balance a steady job with a creative passion. He helped change the world of French theatre forever.
