Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti was a writer from Italy.

He was a librettist. A librettist writes the words for an opera. An opera is a big story told through music. These words help singers tell a story on stage. People love operas because they combine music and drama. Giovanni helped make these stories happen for many years.

Writing an opera is a big job. First, the librettist must create the words. Giovanni often worked with a partner. He worked with a man named Guido Menasci. They wrote many of his stories together. Sometimes he worked with a composer. A composer is a person who writes the music. These two people work as a team. They turn words into a musical performance.

Giovanni was born in a city called Livorno.

He lived his whole life there. He was born on March 17, 1863. He died in that same city in 1934. He was very famous for his friendship with Pietro Mascagni. Mascagni was a composer. They worked together to create art. This partnership was a very important part of his life.

Giovanni wrote many different operas over many years. His first big success was Cavalleria rusticana in 1890. He wrote I Rantzau in 1892. Other works included Regina Diaz in 1894. He also wrote Silvano in 1895. In 1896, he wrote Zanetto. Later, he wrote Amica in 1905. He wrote La sposa di Nino in 1913. He even wrote Pinotta in 1932.

His work connects many different types of art. He was a dramatist and a playwright. This means he wrote plays for the stage. He was also a writer of the 19th and 20th centuries. His words gave music a way to tell stories. Without a librettist, the music would have no words. He helped shape the world of Italian opera. His life shows how writers and musicians work together.
