He is known for a style called verismo. This style aims to show life exactly as it is. Verga wanted his books to act like real documents. He believed stories should be told with a scientific view. This means the writer stays neutral and does not judge.

Verga's way of writing changed many times during his life. He started by writing historical stories when he was only 16. Later, he wrote about romantic love and personal feelings. He even wrote stories about dancers and painters in Florence. In Milan, he met many other writers and thinkers.

He spent time in cafes and social clubs. These experiences helped him move toward his most famous style. He eventually focused on the truth of everyday life.

In 1877, Verga met a writer named Luigi Capuana. They both loved a book by a French writer named Zola. Together, they helped start the verismo movement. They wanted to create a modern type of Italian novel. Verga began writing stories about Sicilian peasants and fishermen. One famous story is about a young boy named Rosso Malpelo. This boy worked in a mine and was treated poorly.

Verga planned to write five large novels called the Ciclo dei vinti. This means the "Cycle of the Vanquished." These books look at how money and social status change people. His first major book was I Malavoglia, published in 1881. It tells the story of a family of fishermen. They face many hard problems like natural disasters and debt. His other masterpiece is Mastro-don Gesualdo, published in 1889. It is about a builder who tries to become a noble.

This book is very sad and shows how money can isolate a person.

Verga's ideas often focused on a concept called "la roba." This term refers to the gathering of goods, land, and money. He showed how the desire for wealth could change a person's heart. His stories often feel very dark or pessimistic. This is because he shows how hard life can be for many. Even though his work is sometimes sad, it is very powerful. People still read his books to understand Italian history and life.
