Émile Augier was a famous French writer who made plays. He was born in Valence in 1820. He belonged to a well-to-do family. Augier spent much of his life telling stories on stage.

His work helped people look at the real world. He did not want to make life look perfect or magical. Instead, he wanted to show how people truly lived. This made his plays very important to French culture. He was even a member of the Académie Française. This is a very special group for writers in France.

Augier had a very specific way of writing his stories. He often wrote in verse, which is a rhythmic way of using words. He also wrote many plays using prose. Prose is the normal way people talk and write.

His prose was known for being direct and very smart. He used wit to make his audience think and laugh. Sometimes he worked all by himself to write a play. Other times, he worked with partners like Jules Sandeau or Eugène Marin Labiche. They would join their ideas to create a new story for the stage.

His career began with a big success in 1844. He wrote a play called La Ciguë.

At first, a famous theater refused to show it. However, the Odéon theater produced it with great success. This moment helped his career take off. He wrote many more plays over the next several decades. Some of these plays were comedies that made people smile. Others were called problem plays because they looked at hard choices. He even wrote a libretto, which is the text for an opera, for a work called Sapho in 1851.

Augier wrote about many different things and people. He wrote a play called Le Fils de Giboyer in 1862.

This play was about big ideas in French society. He also wrote plays that showed the feeling of patriotism. This happened after the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. His play Jean de Thommeray helped show this pride in one's country. He was very careful about the quality of his work. After 1879, he stopped writing new plays. He did not want to produce work that was not his best.

Many people compare his style to other great writers. He was a moralist, much like the famous writer Molière. This means he used his stories to talk about right and wrong.

His characters were not just simple ideas. They were real people with real feelings. They felt like neighbors or friends you might actually know. His stories were not always about big, loud adventures. Instead, they were often about domestic life and how families act. This helped his plays feel very honest and alive to the people watching them.
