Émile Augier was a famous writer from France. He lived from 1820 to 1889. He spent his life making plays for the stage. Some of his plays used verse, which is writing with a rhythm.

Augier liked to write about real life. His characters felt like real people. He did not want to make life look perfect. Instead, he showed things as they truly were. For example, his play Mariage d'Olympe showed a woman in a very honest way. He also wrote a libretto for an opera. A libretto is the text used in an opera.

He often worked with other writers. He wrote plays with Jules Sandeau and others. Some of his stories were funny. Other stories looked at big ideas in society. He even wrote a play about being proud of one's country. This was after a war in 1870.

Augier was very careful with his work. He did not want to make bad plays. Because of this, he stopped writing after 1879. He died at his home in Croissy-sur-Seine. He was a very important part of French art.
