He is best known for creating "well-made plays." He worked with a writer named Eugène Scribe to develop this style. These stories were built around a central conflict. This conflict was a struggle between characters that kept people watching. Sardou believed that conflict was the most important part of drama. He often used history to make his stories feel very real.

His plays were so popular that many became famous operas. For example, his play La Tosca became the opera Tosca in 1900.

Sardou had a very difficult start to his life. His family lost their wealth when frost killed their olive trees. He had to teach many subjects like Latin and math to earn money. He even tried to study medicine but could not afford it. At one point, he lived in poverty and became very sick with typhoid fever.

A kind lady named Mlle de Brécourt helped nurse him back to health. She used her connections to introduce him to the theater world. This help changed his life and allowed his career to finally begin.

Writing was a careful process for Sardou. He often studied the work of Eugène Scribe to learn. He would read the first act of a Scribe play and then write the rest himself. After that, he would compare his work to the original. He liked to build his stories backward from a powerful climax. A climax is the most exciting part of a story. He also used historical records to find new ideas for his plays.

Sardou wrote many plays for famous actors of his time. He wrote several plays specifically for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. One of these was Fédora, which was written in 1882. This play was so popular that it helped make the fedora hat famous. He also wrote a play called Madame Sans-Gêne for Gabrielle Réjane.

His plays were performed in many places, including London. He was even elected to the Académie française in 1878. This is a very important group for French writers.

Today, people still remember Sardou in many different ways. In New Orleans, a chef created a dish called Eggs Sardou. This was to honor the writer during a visit to the city. There is also a dish called Lobster Thermidor in Paris.
