Molière was born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in Paris. His family was wealthy. He studied at a school called the Collège de Clermont. This school gave him a taste for the stage. At age 21, he left his old life. He wanted to be an actor. He started a group called the Illustre Théâtre.

He spent twelve years traveling to perform. He learned a style called Commedia dell'arte. This style uses funny, improvised acting. Molière used these skills to write his own plays. He wrote farces, which are short, silly plays. He also wrote musical comedies with songs and dances.

Some kings liked his work. The brother of King Louis XIV helped him. Molière's group became the King's Troupe. He wrote plays like The School for Wives. These stories mocked how some people acted. His plays were translated into many languages. They are still performed at the Comédie-Française today.
