Pierre Marivaux was a famous writer from France. He lived in the 1700s. He was a master of the comedy. This means he wrote funny plays for the stage. He wrote between 30 and 40 plays. Most of his best plays were for the Comédie-Italienne. This was a famous theater in Paris. His plays often focused on love. He also wrote long stories called novels. Two of his famous novels were unfinished. They were called La Vie de Marianne and Le Paysan parvenu.

Marivaux had a very special way of writing. People call this style "marivaudage." It is a way of talking that is playful and flirtatious. His characters use clever words to tease each other. They often say what they think they feel. This style makes his writing very charming. He was also a member of the Académie française. This is a group for great writers. Even today, people make movies from his plays. Some of his stories are even turned into musicals. His work helps us see how people act in love.
