Pierre Choderlos de Laclos wrote it. He first published it in 1782. It is an epistolary novel. This means the story is told through letters. The characters write to each other. These letters show their true thoughts. They also show their lies.

The story follows two rivals. Their names are the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont. They are both part of the French nobility. They play mean games to trick others. They want to ruin people for fun. These games eventually lead to their own ruin. The Marquise loses her beauty and her money. The Vicomte dies after a duel. The story is very sad and dark.

Many people find this book important. It shows the problems in French high society. It was written before the French Revolution. Some say it was a way to criticize the ruling class. People have made many plays and films from it. One famous film came out in 1988. There is even a modern movie called Cruel Intentions. This movie moves the story to a high school.
