It is known as an epistolary novel. This means the story is told through letters written by the characters. These letters allow readers to see different sides of the same person. One character might act kind in one letter but show a mean side in another. This makes the story feel very complex and interesting. People study this book to understand how characters can hide their true selves. It remains a very important part of French literature today.

The story follows two main rivals named the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont. They are both members of the French nobility. They use letters to plan mean tricks to ruin other people. The Marquise wants to corrupt a young woman named Cécile de Volanges. At the same time, Valmont tries to trick a virtuous woman named Madame de Tourvel. They play these games to amuse themselves and gain power. However, their schemes eventually turn against them. Their rivalry leads to a sad ending where they both lose everything.

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos wrote this book many years ago. He first published it in four volumes on March 23, 1782. The book was published by Durand Neveu. Laclos wanted to write something that would make a noise and last forever. He wrote it as a "roman à clef." This is a story where real people or places are described using different names. Some people believe he used the story to criticize the French aristocracy. This was the ruling class of France before the French Revolution began.

There are many interesting facts about this book's history. It was first translated into English in 1812. The story is set during the Ancien Régime in France. The characters include many different people like the Chevalier Danceny and the Comte de Gercourt. Even though the book was scandalous, some famous people like Queen Marie Antoinette enjoyed it. The Marquise eventually loses her beauty and fortune after getting smallpox. The Vicomte dies after a duel with Danceny. These details show how high the stakes are in the story.

Because the story is so powerful, many artists have used it for new projects. It has been turned into many plays, including a famous one from 1985. There is also a very successful film from 1988 starring Glenn Close. You might even know a modern version called Cruel Intentions. That movie moves the story from old France to a high school in New York. The story has also been made into operas and even ballets. This shows how much people still love these themes of trickery and drama.
