His mother was related to the King of France by blood. His father was a captain who went on many diplomatic missions. Sade lived a life of many changes, from being a soldier to a writer.

Sade's life followed a very difficult path due to his actions. He served as an officer during the Seven Years' War. He rose to the rank of captain in the Burgundian Cavalry in 1759.

However, he faced many legal problems later in life. He was accused of crimes involving religion and sexual behavior. These scandals led to him being arrested many times. He spent most of his adult years in prisons or in insane asylums. He eventually died in the Charenton insane asylum in 1814.

Writing became a major part of his life while he was locked away. During his first long prison stay from 1777 to 1790, he wrote many books.

His wife helped him by smuggling his writings out of the prison. He wrote many different things, including novels, plays, and short stories. Some of these were published under his own name. Most of his work, however, appeared without his name or after he died. His books often mixed stories with ideas about politics and philosophy.

Some of his most famous works include *Justine* and *The 120 Days of Sodom*.

These books are known for having very graphic and violent scenes. They include descriptions of harm, murder, and sexual acts. Because his characters took pleasure in hurting others, his name gave us a new word. The word "sadism" comes directly from his name. People still debate how much of his behavior was actually criminal. Some scholars argue about whether his actions matched the clinical definition of sadism.

Today, people still talk about Sade in many different ways. In the 20th century, many writers began to study his work more closely. Some see him as a person who helped start new ways of thinking. They link him to famous thinkers like Sigmund Freud or Friedrich Nietzsche. Other people, like Andrea Dworkin, criticize his work. They argue that his writing can be harmful to certain people. His life has even been turned into plays and movies by other artists.
