He did many jobs like writing books and studying art. He was also a publisher and a critic. A critic is someone who looks at art and shares their thoughts. Edmond loved to find beauty in many different places. He was especially fond of art from Japan. He also loved the Rococo style from the 1700s. This style is known for being very fancy and light.

Edmond often worked with his brother, Jules de Goncourt. They did many things as a team. Together, they wrote novels and essays about art. They also started a journal to share their ideas. One of their most famous books was Germinie Lacerteux, written in 1865. This book was special because it showed the lives of working people. They also wrote a series of essays called L'Art du XVIIIe siècle. This work helped people appreciate older French art again. They even lived in a house in Auteuil that they bought in 1868. This home was full of art from France and the Far East.

Edmond was born in Nancy, France, on May 26, 1822. His parents were Marc-Pierre Huot de Goncourt and Annette-Cécile de Goncourt. His father had been an officer in Napoleon I's army. Edmond went to several schools, including the Lycée Condorcet. He studied philosophy and law while he was a young man. In 1848, he and Jules inherited money from their mother. This allowed them to stop working boring jobs. Edmond had been a clerk in a treasury office. He did not like that job at all.

Edmond wrote many things by himself after Jules died in 1870. He wrote a book about his art house in 1881. It was called La Maison d'un Artiste. He also wrote a novel called Chérie in 1884. This story was about a woman who loved fashion. Edmond kept writing in his journal for a very long time. He only stopped writing it twelve days before he died. He passed away on July 16, 1896, in Champrosay. He is buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris.

Edmond wanted to make sure that writers were honored. He left all his money to start the Académie Goncourt. This group is a special academy for writers. In honor of Jules, they give out the Prix Goncourt. This is a very famous prize in France. It is given every December to the best new story. The prize has been given out every year since 1903. It is given to the best work of imaginary prose. This helps keep the love of storytelling alive for everyone.
