Les Liaisons dangereuses is a landmark French novel written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. First published in four volumes on March 23, 1782, by Durand Neveu, it is a masterpiece of psychological drama. The work is an epistolary novel, which is a story told through a series of letters. This specific format allows the reader to witness the private thoughts of many different characters. Through these letters, the reader sees how people present themselves differently to different people. This creates a complex web of truth and deception that defines the entire reading experience.

The plot centers on the intense rivalry between two amoral aristocrats. The Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil and the Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont use others as pawns in their social games. Merteuil seeks to corrupt a young woman named Cécile de Volanges to enact revenge. Meanwhile, Valmont attempts to seduce the virtuous and married Madame de Tourvel. They exchange letters to coordinate their manipulative schemes and maintain their power. However, their pursuit of pleasure and control eventually leads to their mutual destruction.

As the letters progress, the characters' deceptions begin to unravel. Valmont successfully seduces Madame de Tourvel, but he unexpectedly begins to fall in love with her. This change in emotion triggers the jealousy of the Marquise. Merteuil tricks Valmont into abandoning Tourvel to protect her own interests. In a retaliatory strike, Valmont reveals Merteuil's involvement in his schemes. This sparks a deadly conflict between the two former allies. The story concludes with a fatal duel and the total social ruin of the protagonists.

Laclos wrote the novel as a roman à clef, which is a story where real people or events are disguised with fictional names. Many scholars believe the book was a thinly disguised attack on the French aristocracy. It depicts the perceived corruption of the Ancien Régime, the social and political system in France before the French Revolution. Although the book was written nearly a decade before the Revolution, it captured the tension of the era. Laclos himself hoped to create a work that would "make a noise" and remain famous long after his death.

The significance of the novel is found in its unique character studies. The critic André Malraux argued that Merteuil and Valmont were unprecedented in European literature. He suggested they were the first characters whose actions were driven by a specific ideology rather than simple impulse. Unlike other epistolary novels of the time, such as Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Laclos uses letters to show conflicting perspectives. This forces the reader to act as a judge, reconciling the various lies told by the characters. This technique turned the novel into a sophisticated critique of moral hypocrisy.

Because the themes of seduction and revenge are so universal, the story has been adapted countless times. In 1985, Christopher Hampton created a successful stage play that moved to Broadway. This play inspired the highly acclaimed 1988 film, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. The story has also been transformed into various other art forms. It has been performed as an opera by composers like Conrad Susa and Piet Swerts. It has even been choreographed into ballets by artists such as David Nixon and Liam Scarlett.

Modern audiences continue to engage with the story through different settings. The 1999 film Cruel Intentions relocated the drama to a modern high school in New York City. Other adaptations have moved the setting to 1930s China or 18th-century Korea. Even digital media has embraced the concept, such as the 2013 "Dangerous Tweets" project. This version adapted the entire novel into a series of single tweets. Whether set in the French court or a modern school, the core elements of the story remain powerful. The novel continues to explore the complicated ways humans interact through communication.
