He lived in Cremona, Italy, during the 1700s. He belonged to a family of talented makers. His grandfather, Andrea, learned his craft from Nicolò Amati. Giuseppe learned how to make violins in his father's shop. People often call him "del Gesù." This name comes from the labels he put on his work after 1731. These labels used a special cross and the letters IHS.

Guarneri had a style that was very different from his family. His violins often have a dark and strong sound. Some people believe his instruments are even better than those made by Antonio Stradivari. Stradivari was a very famous maker who lived at the same time. While Stradivari was very consistent, Guarneri was known for experimenting. He tried new shapes for the holes and different thicknesses for the wood. This made his work unique and very special to many players. His instruments are still highly prized by musicians today.

Guarneri's career was much shorter than many other makers. He died in 1744 when he was only 46 years old. This is much younger than Stradivari, who lived to be 93. Because business was hard, Guarneri often had to work very fast. Some of his later violins from 1742 to 1744 look a bit rough. They might have uneven shapes or jagged edges on the wood. Some people even thought he worked in prison. However, records show he actually worked as an innkeeper to earn money.

Very few of his instruments still exist today. Fewer than 200 of his violins have survived through history. Because they are so rare, they are very expensive. Some of his violins have sold for more than $10 million. One famous violin is named "Il Cannone." It was made in 1743 and once belonged to the player Niccolò Paganini. Another famous instrument is the "Lord Wilton" from 1742. These names show how much people value his skill.

Many of the best violin players in the world use his work. Famous musicians like Itzhak Perlman and Midori have used his instruments. Some players use his violins for their whole careers. Even though his work could look messy, the sound is glorious. This is why collectors and soloists still hunt for them. His legacy lives on through the music played on his wood. To honor him, scientists even named an asteroid "19185 Guarneri."
