The mandolin is a bright and lively stringed instrument. It belongs to the lute family of musical tools.

Most mandolins have eight strings arranged in four pairs. These pairs are called courses. Musicians usually pluck the strings with a small pick called a plectrum. Because the notes fade away quickly, players often use a technique called tremolo. This means they pick the strings very fast to keep the sound going. This rapid movement makes the instrument sound full and continuous.

There are many different ways to build a mandolin. The Neapolitan style has a deep, bowl-shaped back made of wood strips. This style is famous in European classical music and Andean music from Peru.

The archtop mandolin has a curved top and back carved from wood. You will often hear this style in American bluegrass and folk music. Another type is the flat-backed mandolin. It uses thin sheets of wood for the body. This version is common in Irish, British, and Brazilian folk music.

Mandolins evolved from older instruments like the lute. They grew out of earlier tools like the gittern or the mandore. In the 1700s, the mandolin was seen as a romantic instrument. For example, in 1787, a man named Luigi Bassi played a mandolin in an opera.

Early mandolins were quite quiet. They used strings made from animal gut and were played with fingers or quills. Modern mandolins are much louder because they use metal strings. These metal strings pull with a lot of pressure. Because of this, the soundboard must be very strong to stay intact.

Different mandolins have many unique shapes and sizes. The soundboard might be round or shaped like a teardrop. It often has holes called sound holes to let the music out. These holes can be round, oval, or shaped like the letter f.

Some mandolins even have a decorative circle called a rosette. There are also many rare versions like the tiny piccolo mandolin. This small instrument is tuned much higher than a standard mandolin. Other versions have different numbers of strings, like the twelve-string Genoese style.

The mandolin is the highest voice in a large family. It is the soprano member, just like the violin.

Other family members include the mandola, which is an alto instrument. There is also the octave mandolin, which sounds one octave lower. For even deeper sounds, there is the mandocello. This instrument is tuned like a cello. Some people even make hybrid instruments. They might add a metal resonator or use an electric amplifier to make the sound even bigger.
