It belongs to the string family. People love it for its unique sound. You can play it by plucking strings with your fingertips. You can also use a small pick called a plectrum. Some people strum the strings to play chords. This makes the instrument very versatile for many songs.

Making sound is a fascinating thing that happens inside. When you pluck a string, it vibrates at a pitch. This vibration travels from the bridge to the top. The top is called the soundboard. It helps move the air much more easily. The hollow body acts as a sound box. This box holds air that also vibrates. The sound finally comes out through the sound hole.

The history of the guitar is very long. It likely started in Spain during the early 16th century. It grew from an instrument called the guitarra latina. Small instruments called gitterns were used in the Spanish Middle Ages. Later, people played instruments known as vihuelas. In 1790, many guitars had six pairs of strings. These were called six-course vihuela guitars. They were the main models used in Spain back then.

Many makers helped create the modern guitar we see today. Antonio Torres Jurado changed the guitar around 1850. He made the body larger and changed its shape. He also used fan bracing to keep the wood strong. Later, the company C.F. Martin introduced steel strings. This helped guitars play loudly in jazz bands. They also added a steel truss rod to the neck. This rod keeps the neck stable under high tension.

Today, you can find many different types of guitars.

Some have nylon strings and some have steel strings. There are also different body shapes to try. A small parlor guitar is very compact. A grand concert shape is good for recording music. A large dreadnought shape produces a big volume. Some guitars are even called acoustic-electric guitars. These can be plugged into speakers to play louder.
