This family includes the guitar, but the ukulele is much smaller. Most ukuleles have four nylon strings. Most players tune these strings to G-C-E-A. However, the baritone size is usually tuned to D-G-B-E. You can find many different shapes for this instrument. Some look like a standard figure-eight. Others look like a pineapple or even a boat paddle.

Some are even made from old wooden cigar boxes.

Many ukuleles are made from wood. High-quality ones use solid hardwoods like mahogany. In Hawaii, makers often use a special wood called koa. This wood grows only in Hawaii. Cheaper models might use plywood or laminated woods. The strings used to be made of catgut. Today, players use nylon or other synthetic materials. Some strings even have metal or silver-plated copper wrapped around them. These special strings can help make the instrument louder.

The ukulele has a very interesting history. It began in the 1880s with Portuguese immigrants. These travelers came from places like Madeira and the Azores. They brought small, guitar-like instruments to the Hawaiian Islands. Three men named Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias were the first makers.

They arrived on a ship called the SS Ravenscrag in 1879. King Kalākaua helped the instrument become a huge part of Hawaiian culture. He played it at royal gatherings. The name ukulele means "jumping flea" in Hawaiian. This might describe how the player's fingers move quickly.

This small instrument has traveled all over the world.

In the 1920s, it became a massive fad in the United States. It was popular because it was easy to carry and cheap to buy. In Canada, a man named J. Chalmers Doane used it to teach music. At one point, 50,000 people learned through his program. The instrument also arrived in Japan in 1929. Yukihiko Haida brought it there after his father died. Even though some music was banned during World War II, players kept the ukulele alive in secret.

Today, the ukulele is seeing a big revival.

Many people use it to learn music in school. It is also very popular on the internet. For example, a video of Jake Shimabukuro playing a George Harrison song has over 17 million views. Famous singers like George Harrison and even The Beatles have played it. It is a tool for both solo players and big groups. Whether playing alone or in an ensemble, it brings people together through music.
