These shirts have collars and buttons down the front. Most of them have short sleeves and bright, colorful prints. You might see patterns of flowers or palm trees on the fabric. Some shirts use traditional Hawaiian quilt designs or tapa designs.

Some people prefer a "reverse print" style. This means the pattern is printed on the inside of the shirt. This makes the outside look much more muted and calm. People can wear these shirts whether they are men or women.

There are many ways to wear an aloha shirt. Many people choose to wear them untucked. This style might have been influenced by Filipino people living in Hawaii. Women often wear a version with a lower V-neck style. They often wear their shirts with the tails hanging out. You can also tuck the shirt into your trousers if you want. In the 1950s, men could wear them for business. However, they had to keep them tucked in for that. Today, wearing them tucked or untucked is just a matter of personal taste.

These shirts have a very interesting history. Some say they began in the 1920s or early 1930s. A shop in Honolulu called Musa-Shiya the Shirtmaker made them. They used colorful Japanese prints to make the shirts. Another story says a merchant named Ellery Chun helped create them. He owned a store in Waikiki called King-Smith Clothiers and Dry Goods. Chun may have been the first to sell them ready-made on shelves. He even trademarked the name "Aloha Shirt" in 1937. He kept the rights to that name for twenty years.

By the end of the 1930s, the aloha shirt industry was growing fast.

There were 450 people working in the industry by then. It was worth about $600,000 every year. Two famous companies, Kamehameha and Branfleet, both started in 1936. After World War II, many people brought these shirts home to the United States. A designer named Alfred Shaheen became very famous for his high-quality shirts. Even Elvis Presley wore a red Shaheen shirt in 1961. Other well-known brands like Tori Richard and Reyn Spooner also started in 1956.

In 1947, the Aloha Week festival helped make the shirts popular. This festival celebrated Hawaiian music, dance, and traditions. Later, a group called the Hawaiian Fashion Guild started "Aloha Friday." This was a campaign to let people wear casual clothes to work. It officially began in 1966. This idea eventually spread to California and the rest of the world. It is now known as "Casual Friday" in many places. Today, aloha shirts are a top export from Hawaii.
