In American English, the word covers many different kinds of tops. In British English, a shirt usually has a collar and sleeves with cuffs. It also has a full opening in the front with buttons or snaps. People might wear a necktie under the collar of a shirt. This simple piece of clothing is a very important part of how we dress. It can be casual or very formal depending on the style.

Many different parts make up a shirt. Some shirts have no sleeves at all, like a sleeveless shirt or a tank top. Others have short sleeves or long sleeves that reach the wrist. Some long sleeves have cuffs that fasten with buttons. A special type called a French cuff is folded over and uses cufflinks. You might also see a shirt with a collar that is separate and adjustable. This helps the shirt fit the neck perfectly. These small details change how a shirt looks and feels.

History shows us that shirts have been around for a very long time. The oldest preserved garment is a linen shirt from an Egyptian tomb. This shirt was found at Tarkan and belongs to the First Dynasty. It had fine pleats to help the wearer move easily. The designer even added a small fringe to decorate the neck and seams. For many centuries, shirts were worn only by men as underwear. In the Middle Ages, they were plain and undyed. They were often only seen on humble people like shepherds.

Shirts have changed a lot through the years. In the 1700s, men used the long tails of their shirts like drawers. By the 1800s, colored shirts began to appear in paintings. At first, only lower-class workers wore colored shirts. By 1920, a sky-blue shirt became a standard choice for men. In 1860, women began wearing shirts too. This happened after Empress Eugénie of France popularized the red Garibaldi shirt. Even the way we wash them has changed over time.

Today, we have a huge variety of shirts for every person. A T-shirt is a casual choice made of stretchy, knit fabric. A Guayabera is a special dress shirt with four pockets and embroidery. Some people wear a polo shirt for sports like tennis or golf. You might even see a baseball jersey with a team logo. There are even special shirts like the Aloha shirt or the poet shirt. From the simple T-shirt to the formal dress shirt, they are everywhere.
