Many different kinds of shirts exist today.

History shows that shirts have changed a lot. The oldest shirt found was made of linen. It was from an Egyptian tomb. This shirt had fine pleats. These folds helped the person move easily. It also had a pretty fringe for decoration.

For a long time, shirts were worn under other clothes. In the Middle Ages, they were plain and undyed. Men wore them as underwear. In the 1800s, colored shirts became common. At first, only workers wore them. By 1920, blue shirts became a standard choice for men.

There are many styles to choose from. A T-shirt is a casual shirt made of stretchy fabric. It has no buttons or collar. A dress shirt is more formal. It often has a collar and cuffs. Some shirts even have special parts. For example, a Guayabera is a dress shirt with four pockets and embroidery.
