Coats have been around for a very long time. Some styles may be five thousand years old. In the past, cloth was very expensive. Only rich people could afford nice coats. This helped show their wealth and rank. Later, machines helped make cloth cheaper. The sewing machine also helped make coats for everyone.

There are many different kinds of coats. An overcoat is a large coat worn outside. It goes over your other clothes to keep you warm.
