Slippers have a very long history. People in China made them in 4700 BC. They used cotton or woven grass. Some had leather linings and dragon shapes. Native American moccasins were also used indoors. They were soft and had beadwork. They often showed scenes from nature.

Many kinds of slippers exist today. Open-heel slippers cover the toes but leave the heel open.

Closed slippers have a guard to keep your foot inside. Some look like boots and have soft fleece. You can even find novelty slippers. These are fun shoes that look like animal paws or cars.

Slippers appear in famous stories too. Cinderella is known for her glass slippers. In the movie The Wizard of Oz, a character wears ruby slippers. Those red shoes sold for a lot of money at an auction! In some places, like Hawaii, people call flip-flops slippers.
