A punch is a strike made with a fist.

Many martial arts and sports use them. In western boxing, punches are the only way to attack. Fighters often wear gloves or hand wraps. These tools help protect them from injury.

There are many ways to throw a punch. A jab is a quick, straight move. It is often used to keep distance. A cross is a straight punch from the rear hand. It uses the hips to find power. A hook turns to hit the side of the body. An uppercut moves upward toward the head.

Some styles use many different moves. In karate, punches are called tsuki. A reverse punch is called gyaku-zuki. This move uses the hand opposite the stepping leg.

Other sports like Muay Thai use both punches and kicks. Some sports like judo do not use punches in matches at all. Every style has its own way to move the arms and body.
