A punch is a striking blow made with the fist. It is a key part of many martial arts and combat sports. In western boxing, the punch is the only offensive move allowed.

To stay safe, athletes often use hand wraps or padded gloves. These tools help protect them from getting hurt during a fight. People use punches for many reasons, such as defense or scoring points. Different sports have different rules for how these strikes can be used.

There are many ways to move your body to make a punch. A jab is a quick, straight blow used to keep distance. A cross is a straight punch from the rear hand. It uses the rotation of the hips to create power.

A hook turns to hit the side of the head or body. An uppercut moves vertically toward the target. To be effective, most of these must land on the knuckles. Using a flat fist instead of the knuckles can change the type of strike.

Different martial arts have their own special names for these moves. In karate, punching techniques are called tsuki or zuki.

For example, a reverse punch is known as gyaku-zuki. This move uses the hand opposite of the stepping leg. In Taekwondo, a lunge punch is called Bandae Jireugi. These specific names help students learn the exact way to move. Each school of practice might have its own unique way of teaching.

Some punches are famous for how they use energy and momentum. A haymaker is a wide punch that mimics swinging a tool to cut hay. It relies on weight transfer instead of just muscle. The one-inch punch was made famous by Bruce Lee. It uses the whole body to strike from just an inch away.

A superman punch involves lunging forward like the flying hero. This move uses the back foot to push the striker toward the opponent.

Not every sport uses punches in the same way. Some styles like Muay Thai or kickboxing use both punches and kicks. Other styles like Suntukan or Russian fist fighting use only punches. In contrast, sports like wrestling or judo do not use punches at all. In judo, striking is sometimes used in practice forms called kata. However, these strikes are forbidden during actual competitions. This shows how much the rules can change between different arts.
