A blouse is a loose garment for the upper body.

It is often gathered at the waist or hips. This can happen using a belt, pleats, or a tight hem. This design helps the fabric hang loosely over the person wearing it. People use the word to describe many different styles. It can mean a woman's dress shirt or a loose shirt for men. Some men wear styles called poet shirts or Cossack shirts.

These loose styles can be very fashionable.

Most blouses are made from light and soft fabrics. Many are made of silk or thin cotton. Until the early 1990s, many were made from synthetic fibers like polyester.

You might see many pretty details on a blouse. Some have ruffles, embroidery, or small loops. A blouse might have a collar in many shapes. These include the Peter Pan collar or the revere collar. Some even have a soft bow tied at the neck. Tailoring helps the blouse fit the shape of the person. This is done with special sewing like darting at the waist.

The word blouse actually comes from the French language. It originally described a blue blouse worn by French workmen. Later, the name was used for smocks worn by English farm laborers.

In 1870, the word was used to describe clothing for a young lady. Some think the word comes from the Latin name for a town. Others think it comes from a word meaning short wool. History shows that blouses changed many times over the years. They moved from simple work clothes to very fancy fashion.

Blouses have many famous styles from different times. In the 1860s, the red Garibaldi shirt became popular for men and women.

During the 1890s, blouses became standard for women working in offices. In the 1900s, people loved the "lingerie blouse" with lots of lace. The 1920s brought the silk jumper blouse and V-neck styles.

In the 1970s, wide collars and polyester were very popular. Even in 1913, a German catalog sold blouses for between 2.75 and 9.50 Marks. These prices show how common they were for different people.

Many cultures use special blouses for their traditions. In Bavaria and Austria, women wear a white blouse with a dirndl.

These blouses are often cropped above the waist. They might have short puff sleeves or lace. In Scotland, Highland dancers wear a white blouse with a tartan skirt.

This is part of the beautiful Aboyne dress. There is also a curious rule about buttons on women's blouses. The buttons are usually on the left side. Some people think this helped maids button the clothes more easily. This tradition stays with us today even though things have changed.
