An aloha shirt is a distinct style of collared, buttoned dress shirt originating in Hawaii.

These garments are typically short-sleeved and crafted from printed fabric. While they are traditionally worn untucked, individuals may also choose to tuck them into their trousers. In Hawaii, these shirts serve as both casual wear and informal business attire. They represent a significant cultural symbol and remain the premier textile export of the Hawaii manufacturing industry.

The construction of an aloha shirt involves specific design elements. Most shirts feature buttons running down the front, sometimes extending only to the chest. A common detail is a single pocket sewn onto the left chest. Designers often pay close attention to ensure the printed pattern remains continuous across this pocket. Women's versions often feature a lower-cut, v-neck style and straight lower hems. Some locals prefer a "reverse print" style, where the pattern is printed on the interior. This technique results in a more muted appearance on the exterior of the shirt.

Patterns on these shirts vary significantly by style and intent. Traditional men's aloha shirts often use muted colors and feature Hawaiian quilt designs or tapa designs. They may also display simple floral patterns. Contemporary designs have expanded to include more tropical elements. These might include prints of palm trees, surfboards, or even tropical drinks. While tourists often embrace bright and garish colors, local residents, known as kamaʻāina, have historically preferred more subtle designs.

The history of the aloha shirt involves competing accounts of its origin. Some sources trace the style to the 1920s or early 1930s. During this time, a Honolulu shop called Musa-Shiya the Shirtmaker used colorful Japanese prints, specifically kasuri, to create shirts. Another account credits Ellery Chun of King-Smith Clothiers and Dry Goods in Waikiki. Chun may have been the first to mass-produce these shirts for ready-to-wear sale. He is also credited with trademarking "Aloha Sportswear" in 1936 and "Aloha Shirt" in 1937.

By the late 1930s, the aloha shirt had become a significant industry. At that time, the industry was worth $600,000 annually and employed 450 people. Notable manufacturers like Kamehameha and Branfleet, later known as Kahala, were both founded in 1936. Following World War II, many returning servicemen brought these Hawaiian garments back to the mainland United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, designer Alfred Shaheen gained fame for producing high-quality, chic versions. Even Elvis Presley famously wore a red Shaheen-designed shirt on the 1961 album cover for Blue Hawaii.

Cultural festivals played a major role in the popularity of alohawear. In 1947, the first Aloha Week festival was held at Ala Moana Park. This event revived interest in ancient Hawaiian music, dancing, and sports. The festival included a floral parade and a makahiki festival, which attracted 8,000 people. This event helped the fashion industry by encouraging people to wear muumuu and aloha shirts. Aloha Week eventually expanded to six islands and was renamed Aloha Festivals in 1991.

The aloha shirt also influenced modern workplace traditions. In 1962, the Hawaiian Fashion Guild launched "Operation Liberation" to promote aloha shirts as business attire. They distributed shirts to members of the Hawaii House of Representatives and the Senate. In 1965, the Guild lobbied for "Aloha Friday," a day for men to wear aloha shirts to work. This tradition officially began in 1966 and helped replace formal business wear for young adults. This custom eventually spread to California and the rest of the world. By the 1990s, this global trend became widely known as "Casual Friday."
