This family includes the guitar, but the ukulele is much smaller. It is known for its portability and relatively inexpensive cost. People use it for solo performances and in large musical ensembles. The instrument is highly valued for its ability to foster musical literacy. Many people find it an easy way to begin learning music. It has become a global icon of joy and creativity.

Constructing a ukulele involves choosing specific materials to shape its tone.

Most instruments feature a figure-eight body shape similar to a small guitar. Some makers create unique shapes like the "pineapple" ukulele or even boat-paddle designs. High-quality ukuleles are often made from solid hardwoods like mahogany. In Hawaii, makers traditionally prefer koa, a type of acacia endemic to the islands. Cheaper models frequently use plywood or laminated woods with a spruce soundboard. The strings were once made of catgut, but modern players use nylon polymers. Some strings include metal or silver-plated copper windings to change the sound.

Ukuleles come in several distinct sizes and tuning configurations.

The four common sizes are soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. The soprano is the standard size in Hawaii and was the original model. Most sizes use four nylon strings tuned to G-C-E-A. However, the baritone ukulele is different and is usually tuned to D-G-B-E. Some specialized versions exist, such as the sopranino or the bass ukulele. There are also taropatch ukuleles, which feature six or eight strings in multiple courses. These extra strings can provide a greater volume when strumming.

The history of the ukulele began in the 1880s.

It was based on Portuguese instruments brought to Hawaii by immigrants. These travelers came from Madeira, the Azores, and Cape Verde. Three cabinet makers—Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias—became the first makers. They arrived on the SS Ravenscrag in late August 1879. King Kalākaua was a vital patron who promoted the instrument at royal gatherings. The name "ukulele" roughly translates to "jumping flea" in Hawaiian. This may refer to the quick movement of a player's fingers.

The instrument has seen massive popularity in many different countries.

In the 1920s, the ukulele became a major fad in the United States. During this Jazz Age, manufacturers like Martin added ukulele lines to their production. In Canada, J. Chalmers Doane used the instrument to teach music in schools. At the peak of his program, 50,000 students and adults learned to play. Japan also embraced the instrument after Yukihiko Haida introduced it in 1929. Despite music bans during World War II, Japanese fans kept the tradition alive in secret.

Notable musicians have helped cement the ukulele's place in popular culture.

The Beatles members George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon all played the instrument. Harrison was a great lover of the uke and taught Tom Petty to play. In the United States, Marilyn Monroe played the instrument in the film "Some Like It Hot." More recently, Jake Shimabukuro's YouTube video received over 17 million views by 2020.

Today, the ukulele connects to modern technology and education systems.
