The guitar is a versatile stringed musical instrument. It is classified as a chordophone. This means it produces sound through vibrating strings stretched between two fixed points.

Most modern guitars feature six or twelve strings. Players usually hold the instrument flat against their bodies. To create music, the dominant hand strums or plucks the strings. This can be done with fingers or a guitar pick.

Simultaneously, the opposite hand presses specific strings against metal frets. These frets allow the player to change the pitch of the notes.

There are two primary ways a guitar projects its sound. An acoustic guitar uses a resonant hollow chamber. When the strings vibrate, the hollow body amplifies the sound naturally. This body acts as a resonating chamber to increase volume.

An electric guitar uses a different mechanism. It employs an electronic pickup to capture string vibrations. This signal is then sent to an amplifier. This technology allowed for the creation of solid-body guitars. These instruments use a solid block of wood instead of a hollow chamber. Solid-body guitars are less prone to unwanted acoustic feedback.

Modern guitars fall into several distinct categories. The classical guitar, also called the Spanish guitar, is often played solo. Musicians use a comprehensive fingerstyle technique for this instrument. They pluck each string individually rather than strumming. Other acoustic types include the steel-string acoustic and the archtop guitar. The archtop is sometimes called a jazz guitar.

There is also the Hawaiian guitar, which is played across the player's lap. Electric guitars include hollowbody, archtop, and solid-body models. Solid-body guitars are widely used in rock music. Some electric models even feature seven or twelve strings.

The history of the guitar involves many ancient ancestors. These include the gittern, the vihuela, and various Renaissance guitars. Some scholars suggest the four-string oud influenced the instrument. The Moors brought the oud to Iberia in the 8th century.

In Spain, two types of guitars existed by the year 1200. The guitarra morisca had a rounded back and several sound holes. The guitarra Latina had a narrower neck and one sound hole. By the 14th century, these specific names were dropped. They were simply called guitars. The Spanish vihuela was another vital predecessor. It was a guitar-like instrument used in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Evolution continued with the five-course baroque guitar. This instrument became popular in Spain, Italy, and France. It featured five courses of strings rather than four. There was historical controversy regarding its invention. The poet Lope de Vega credited Vicente Espinel. However, some scholars contest this due to Espinel's birth year.

The modern form was shaped by Spanish makers. Antonio Torres Jurado was a particularly important figure. He increased the body size and altered its proportions. He also invented fan-bracing. This is an internal pattern of wood reinforcements. Bracing secures the top and back against string tension. It also greatly improved volume, tone, and projection.

The materials used for guitars have changed significantly over time. Historically, guitars were made of wood with catgut strings. Steel guitar strings were introduced in the United States near the end of the 19th century. However, nylon and steel strings only became mainstream after World War II. The electric guitar was first patented in 1937. This invention changed how music was made and heard. It allowed for the use of electronic effects. Musicians can now use units to create reverb or distortion.

These tools added new sonic possibilities to the instrument.

The guitar holds immense significance in global culture. It is a primary instrument in many genres. These include blues, bluegrass, country, and flamenco. It is also essential to jazz, rock, punk, and metal.

The loud, amplified sound of the electric guitar helped develop rock and heavy metal. It serves as both an accompaniment for riffs and a tool for solos. The instrument is even used in pop and soul. Some modern genres like hip-hop or trap use guitar sounds as samples. From classical solo performances to loud rock concerts, the guitar remains a central part of musical expression.
