He was born in Glasgow in 1904. His father, John, was a violin teacher. William began playing the violin at age four. He performed his first public concert at age 12. He played a piece called Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Later, he moved to London to study music. He won a gold medal at the Guildhall School of Music. He also enjoyed reading and playing chess during his youth.

At first, Primrose focused on the violin. However, his path changed in Belgium between 1926 and 1929. A teacher named Eugène Ysaÿe heard him play an Amati viola. This instrument belonged to his father. Ysaÿe suggested that Primrose should play the viola instead. Primrose switched instruments in 1930. He joined the London String Quartet as a violist. This group traveled through North and South America. They eventually disbanded in 1935 because of the Great Depression.

Primrose became a great soloist later in his life. His solo career on the viola really grew in 1941. He toured with a singer named Richard Crooks. He also worked with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. In 1939, he started the Primrose Quartet. His group included Oscar Shumsky, Josef Gingold, and Harvey Shapiro. He was very proud of their musical skill. Primrose also helped create new music. He asked Béla Bartók to write a concerto for the viola. This piece was finished by Tibor Serly after Bartók died in 1945.

His instruments were very special and valuable.

He first played an Amati viola. Later, he bought a 1697 Guarneri viola in 1954. This instrument was made by the Guarneri family. It has a golden color with an orange tint. The wood includes Italian maple and spruce. This viola was sold for over $4 million in 2012. This was the highest price ever paid for a viola at auction. He also used a Stradivari instrument on loan during the 1940s.

Primrose spent much of his time teaching others. He taught at many places like the Curtis Institute of Music. He also taught at the University of Southern California. He spent years at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Primrose wrote several books about how to play the viola. One book is called Technique is Memory. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Today, the Primrose International Viola Competition honors his great work.
