He was born in Glasgow in 1904. His father was a music teacher. William started playing the violin when he was very young. He even played his first concert at age 12.

At first, William played the violin. But one teacher suggested he try the viola instead. The viola is a string instrument. It is larger than a violin. William became a master of the viola. He played in groups like the London String Quartet. He also started the Primrose Quartet. This group was known for being very skilled.

William traveled the world as a soloist. A soloist is a person who plays music alone. He played in many big cities. He even had a special instrument made by the Guarneri family. This viola was very valuable.

He also loved to teach. He taught students at many universities. He wrote books to help others learn how to play. People still honor him today. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A big music contest is also named after him. [Caption: William Primrose with the Primrose Quartet.]
