Learning to play at a high level takes many years of practice. Oistrakh started his musical studies when he was only five years old. He studied with a teacher named Pyotr Stolyarsky. Later, he went to the Odessa Conservatory to learn even more. He studied music theory, which is called harmony, with Mykola Vilinsky. By the time he graduated in 1926, he could play very difficult songs. He performed pieces by famous names like Bach and Prokofiev. This hard work helped him become a world-famous soloist.

Oistrakh lived through a very difficult time during World War II. While the war was happening, he went to the front lines. He played music for soldiers and workers in very hard conditions. One famous story tells of a concert in the city of Stalingrad. During the winter of 1942, he played Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto while bombs fell.
