Mischa learned to play tunes by himself as a small boy. He soon moved to Odessa to study at the Imperial Academy of Music. A famous musician named Pablo de Sarasate said he was a great talent. At age 11, Mischa auditioned for the teacher Leopold Auer. He played the Wieniawski Concerto No. 2 and a piece by Paganini. Auer was so impressed that he helped Mischa join the St. Petersburg Conservatory. This was a very big step for a young musician. He was a child prodigy, which means a child with amazing talent.

One famous story happened when Mischa was only eleven years old. He was set to play with the Colonne Orchestra in Pavlovsk. The conductor, Édouard Colonne, did not like playing with child prodigies. He did not know Mischa was a child until he saw him on stage. Colonne was very angry and refused to lead the orchestra. Mischa had to play his music with only a piano for help. However, the music was so good that Colonne changed his mind. He later invited Mischa to play in Paris with the full orchestra.

Mischa became a very busy and successful performer around the world.

He made his debut in Berlin in 1904. He played in London in 1905 and at Carnegie Hall in 1908. In 1914, he traveled to Australia to perform. He moved to the United States and became a citizen in 1923. During one season, he played as many as 107 concerts in 29 weeks. He even performed the premiere of a concerto written just for him. His recorded music was very popular, with over two million sales.

Mischa Elman left behind a huge collection of music for others to hear. He recorded for many different companies like Pathé, RCA Victor, and Decca. His career in recording lasted for more than sixty years. He died in New York City in 1967.
