He was famous for his beautiful tone and impeccable musicality. Elman was a prominent figure in the classical music world during the 20th century. His artistry helped define a specific era of violin playing. He was a Russian-American musician who bridged two different cultures through his art.

Born in 1891 in Talnoye, Russian Empire, Elman grew up in a musical environment.

His grandfather, Yosele Elman, was a klezmer, a professional Jewish musician. His father, Saul Iosipovich Elman, was a melamed and an amateur violinist. Mischa possessed perfect pitch at a very young age. This musical gift allowed him to identify notes with absolute accuracy. Although his father initially hesitated about a musical career, he eventually provided Mischa with a miniature violin. The young boy quickly taught himself several tunes on this small instrument.

Elman's formal training began in Odessa at the Imperial Academy of Music. The famous musician Pablo de Sarasate recommended him as a great talent of Europe. At age 11, Elman auditioned for the legendary teacher Leopold Auer. He performed the Wieniawski Concerto No. 2 and the 24th Caprice by Paganini. Auer was so impressed that he secured Elman's admission to the St. Petersburg Conservatory. This period marked Elman's transition from a gifted child to a professional student.

A famous incident occurred when Elman was only eleven years old in Pavlovsk. His teacher, Auer, arranged for him to play with the Colonne Orchestra. However, the conductor, Édouard Colonne, had a strong dislike for child prodigies. Auer did not disclose Elman's age to the conductor beforehand. When Colonne saw the child on the platform, he refused to lead the orchestra.

Elman was forced to perform with only a piano accompaniment. Despite this difficult start, Colonne was so moved by the performance that he invited Elman to play in Paris. Four months later, Elman successfully performed the Mendelssohn concerto with the full orchestra.

Elman's professional career was incredibly prolific and spanned many continents. He made his Berlin debut in 1904 and his London debut in 1905. In London, he performed the British premiere of Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor. He reached American audiences at Carnegie Hall in 1908. After touring Australia in 1914, he moved to the United States permanently. He became a U.S. citizen in 1923. His work ethic was remarkable, as he sometimes performed 107 concerts in a single 29-week season.

Elman's impact on recorded music was significant, with sales exceeding two million records.

His recording career lasted for over six decades, beginning with Pathé in Paris in 1906. He maintained an exclusive relationship with the Victor Talking Machine Company/RCA Victor until 1950. Later, he recorded for Decca/London and the Vanguard label. His discography includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Mendelssohn. In 1943, he also gave the premiere of Bohuslav Martinů's second concerto, which was composed specifically for him.

Throughout his career, Elman collaborated with many talented musicians. He frequently performed chamber works with the pianist Emmanuel Bay. He also recorded with artists such as Josef Bonime, Carroll Hollister, and Wolfgang Rosé. From 1950 onward, Joseph Seiger served as his steady recital partner. Elman passed away in Manhattan on April 5, 1967, shortly after a rehearsal with Seiger. He is buried in the Westchester Hills Cemetery in New York. His legacy remains tied to the rich history of 20th-century violin performance.
