He is recognized as a leading virtuoso, which means he possesses exceptional technical skill. His career spans many genres, including classical, jazz, klezmer, and bluegrass. Perlman has performed in prestigious venues worldwide. These include a 2007 state dinner for Queen Elizabeth II at the White House. He also performed at the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama. His immense contributions to music have earned him 16 Grammy Awards. He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

Perlman's musical journey began with a single moment of inspiration. At age three, he listened to a violin recital on the radio. This experience motivated him to become a musician. His mother purchased a toy violin for him. He quickly taught himself to play basic melodies. However, his path faced an early obstacle. He was initially denied admission to the Shulamit Conservatory. The school felt he was too small to hold a violin. Despite this, he began formal training one year later with a café violinist.

Physical challenges shaped his early life and performance style. Perlman contracted polio when he was four years old. Consequently, he has used leg braces and crutches since that time. He often uses an electric scooter for mobility. When performing on stage, he plays the violin while seated. These physical realities did not hinder his musical progression. At age five, he entered the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. He studied there for eight years under teacher Rivka Goldgart. He gave his first public recital at age ten.

Perlman moved to the United States at age 13 to pursue advanced studies. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City. He also studied at the Meadowmount School of Music in New York. There, he learned from Ivan Galamian and his assistant, Dorothy DeLay. He gained national fame through appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. He appeared on the program twice in 1958 and again in 1964. During his 1964 appearance, he performed alongside the Rolling Stones. These televised performances helped establish his reputation with a wide audience.

As a soloist, Perlman has collaborated with many famous orchestras.

He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1963. He also won the Leventritt Competition in 1964. Perlman has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also worked with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire includes complex works by composers like Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Mendelssohn. He has even performed as a soloist in famous film scores. Notable examples include the theme for the film Schindler's List.

Perlman utilizes extraordinary instruments to achieve his signature sound. He plays the Soil Stradivarius, a violin crafted in 1714. This instrument was once owned by Yehudi Menuhin. It is considered a masterpiece from Stradivari's "golden period." He also performs with the Guarneri del Gesù 1743 'Sauret.' These historic instruments are essential to his professional recordings and live concerts. His ability to master such delicate tools is a testament to his lifelong dedication to the craft.

Beyond performing, Perlman is deeply committed to music education. He holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair in Violin Studies at Juilliard. He also teaches at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. In 1994, his wife, Toby Perlman, and Suki Sandler founded the Perlman Music Program.

This program began as a summer camp for musicians aged 12 to 18. It has since expanded into a yearlong program. The program encourages students to practice together and build professional networks. This helps young artists avoid the isolation often felt during intense study. Perlman remains an active mentor, coaching students personally to ensure the future of violin playing.
