He is recognized globally for his musical leadership and his commitment to cultural dialogue. Barenboim holds citizenship in Argentina, Israel, Palestine, and Spain. He is currently the only publicly documented person to hold both Israeli and Palestinian citizenships. Through his work, he uses music as a tool to promote understanding between different peoples. This unique perspective makes him a significant figure in both the arts and international relations.

His musical training began at a very young age in Buenos Aires.

Born on 15 November 1942, he began piano lessons at age five with his mother, Aida. His father, Enrique, was also a professional pianist and served as his only teacher. Barenboim gave his first formal concert in Argentina when he was just seven years old. In 1954, he traveled to Salzburg to attend conducting classes led by Igor Markevitch. During this time, he met the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. Furtwängler called the young boy a "phenomenon" and became a major musical influence.

He later became a conductor, making his debut with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1966. Between 1975 and 1989, he served as the music director of the Orchestre de Paris. In 1991, he became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a role he held until 2006. From 1992 until January 2023, he was the general music director of the Berlin State Opera. He also served as the music director of La Scala in Milan starting in 2011.

His musical philosophy often focuses on the internal logic of a composition. Barenboim has frequently rejected the "authentic performance movement." This movement seeks to play music exactly as it sounded on period instruments. Instead, Barenboim argues for finding the tempo from within the music's harmony. For example, in his recordings of Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," he uses a sustaining pedal. This device was not used on the keyboard instruments of Bach's time. He believes that the impact of harmony is more important than strictly reproducing historical styles.

He founded this orchestra alongside the Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said. The group brings together musicians from the Arab world and Israel to play together. This mission continued with the opening of the Barenboim–Said Academy in Berlin in 2016. The academy provides a place for young students from different regions to study music and humanities. In 2017, the Pierre Boulez Saal opened as the academy's public concert hall. This elliptical building was designed by the architect Frank Gehry.

Throughout his life, Barenboim has received numerous high honors and awards. He has won seven Grammy awards for his musical recordings. He was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the United Kingdom. In France, he received the Legion of Honour at the levels of Commander, Grand Officier, and Grand Cross. He also holds the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Additionally, he received the Prince of Asturias Concord Award from Spain. These honors reflect his massive impact on the global classical music community.

In recent years, Barenboim has faced significant changes in his professional life. In October 2022, he announced he would reduce his engagements for health reasons. He resigned from his position at the Berlin State Opera in early 2023. On 6 February 2025, Barenboim shared on Instagram that he has Parkinson's disease. Despite these challenges, his legacy remains tied to the idea of musical connection. He has shown that even in a divided world, art can create a shared space for humanity.
