Yundi's musical journey began with a deep fascination for sound during his early childhood. At age three, an accordion performance at a shopping mall enchanted him so much that he refused to leave. His parents purchased an accordion for him to study with teacher Tan Jianmin. By March 1987, Yundi won the top prize at the Chongqing Children's Accordion Competition. He transitioned to the piano at age seven, studying first with Wu Yong. Later, he spent nine years studying with the well-known teacher Dan Zhaoyi.

His formal education involved several prestigious institutions and rigorous training. After studying with Dan Zhaoyi, Yundi enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music. He later received an invitation to study at the Juilliard School in the United States. From 2001 to 2006, he continued his advanced studies in Germany. He studied under Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. This period of study helped prepare him for a high-level international career. His technical training allowed him to master complex classical repertoires.

Yundi's professional career is marked by significant milestones and prestigious recordings. In 2001, he became the first Chinese pianist signed to Deutsche Grammophon. This major record label released his debut album, "Yundi Li: Chopin," which was warmly received in Japan. He later released a recording of Liszt in 2003. This album was named among the "Best Classical CD's of the Year" by The New York Times. It also won the German Echo Klassik Solo Recording of the Year.
