As a performer, he interprets a vast range of classical music. He is particularly famous for his performances of Romantic music. This style often emphasizes deep emotion and grand musical structures. He also performs works by composers like Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven. His career involves playing solo, leading orchestras, and teaching future musicians.

Zimerman's musical journey began in Zabrze, Poland. He started playing the piano at the age of five. His father, who was also a pianist, encouraged his early studies. Zimerman later attended the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. There, he studied under the teacher Andrzej Jasiński. This formal training provided the foundation for his professional technical skill. He eventually moved to Switzerland and became a Swiss citizen.

His rise to international fame occurred through prestigious musical competitions. In 1973, he won the top prize at the Ludwig van Beethoven International Piano Competition in Czechoslovakia. His career truly launched in 1975 at the Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition. He won first prize at this ninth edition of the competition. This victory led to his first collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1976. That performance was conducted by Herbert Blomstedt.

Mentorship played a vital role in his artistic development. The famous pianist Arthur Rubinstein invited Zimerman to Paris. This invitation began a friendship and mentorship that lasted until Rubinstein died in 1982. Zimerman also debuted in the United States in 1979 with the New York Philharmonic. Since then, he has worked with many legendary conductors. These include Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Pierre Boulez. He has even led the Vienna Philharmonic from his piano seat while conducting.

Zimerman's discography is extensive and highly respected. Most of his recordings are released through Deutsche Grammophon. He has an exclusive, lifelong contract with this label. His recordings cover many different types of musical works. He has recorded the piano concerti of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He also recorded the concerti of Grieg and Schumann with Herbert von Karajan. Notably, he recorded the piano concerti of Ravel with Pierre Boulez. In 2006, he recorded Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Beyond performing, Zimerman contributes to the musical community through teaching and leadership. Since 1996, he has taught piano at the Music Academy in Basel, Switzerland. In 1999, he created the Polish Festival Orchestra. This group was formed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Frédéric Chopin's death. He also serves as an editor for the piano music of Władysław Szpilman. These roles allow him to pass on musical knowledge and preserve cultural history.

His excellence has been recognized with many global honors. In 1994, he received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize in Denmark. He was awarded the Legion of Honour from France in 2005. In 2013, he received the Order of Polonia Restituta from Poland. More recently, he won the Praemium Imperiale in 2022. He also earned the Gramophone Classical Music Award in 2023. These awards reflect his significant impact on the world of classical music.

Zimerman's life also includes moments of strong personal conviction. In 2009, he expressed protest regarding American missile defense policy in Poland. He stated at a concert in Los Angeles that he would not return to the United States. This followed a similar comment he made in 2006 regarding political leadership. He has not made further appearances in the U.S. since that time. His life demonstrates how a musician's influence can extend into social and political discussions.
