Yundi's journey with music started when he was a very small child. When he was three, he heard an accordion playing at a mall. He liked the sound so much that he refused to leave. His parents bought him an accordion, and he won a prize for it in 1987. Later, he began studying the piano with teachers like Wu Yong and Dan Zhaoyi. He spent many years studying at special music schools. Eventually, he went to study in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.
