Many people consider him one of the greatest pianists of all time. He was a leader in the Germanic musical tradition during the 20th century. People loved his music because it felt very human and alive. The composer Jean Sibelius once told him he played like a human being.

Kempff did not just play notes on a page. He brought a sense of deep feeling to every song.

Kempff had a very special way of playing the piano. He wanted the music to sound like a person singing. This is called a lyrical quality. He avoided playing too fast just to show off his skill. Instead, he focused on being spontaneous and rhythmic. Another pianist named Alfred Brendel said Kempff played on impulse. It was as if he waited for the right breeze to move him.

At age nine, he began studying at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. He studied composition with Robert Kahn and piano with Karl Heinrich Barth. Later, he studied at the Viktoria gymnasium in Potsdam.

A small Japanese island was even named Kenpu-san for him. He recorded music for over 60 years. He recorded the complete piano sonatas by both Beethoven and Schubert.
