He was famous for playing a huge variety of music. This included pieces from the baroque era all the way to the 20th century. He was especially known for playing works by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. People loved his music because it had a very special sound. Some felt it was thick and full, like an entire orchestra. Others thought it was spellbinding and unique. Arrau learned to play the piano in a very special way. He was a child prodigy, which means he was much more advanced than other children. He could actually read music before he could even read words. His mother was a piano teacher who introduced him to the instrument. By age four, he was already reading sonatas by Beethoven. He gave his very first concert when he was only five years old. When he was six, he performed for the President of Chile. This performance was so good that the government helped pay for his education.

His journey as a musician took him across the world. At age eight, he moved to Germany to study for ten years. He attended the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. There, he studied under a teacher named Martin Krause. Krause had actually studied with the famous composer Franz Liszt. Arrau became very skilled at playing very difficult music. By age eleven, he could play the Transcendental Etudes by Liszt. These are some of the hardest pieces for a pianist to master. He even played the Paganini Variations by Brahms at that young age.

Arrau lived a very busy and successful life. He was a dual citizen of both Chile and the United States. In 1941, he and his family moved to the United States. They eventually settled in Douglaston, Queens, in New York. Between the ages of 40 and 60, he performed about 120 concerts every single season. He was also part of a very big moment in music history. In 1982, the first-ever classical music CD was released. It featured waltzes by Chopin performed by Arrau himself.

He continued to prepare new, difficult pieces right until the end of his life. He is still remembered today as a true titan of the piano.
