He is known for his amazing skill in many different types of music. He can play solo pieces or work with other musicians in small groups. This type of music is called chamber music. He also works as a conductor, which means he leads a large group of players. People love his music because he has played so many different styles. His journey in music began a long time ago in the Soviet Union. He was born in Gorky in 1937 to a pianist father and an actress mother. He started playing the piano when he was only six years old. By age eight, he was already studying at the Central Music School. Later, he went to the Moscow Conservatory to learn from great teachers. During his student years, he faced hard times with the KGB. They tried to make him work as an informer. Despite these troubles, his talent helped him win many big prizes.

Ashkenazy won several important awards early in his career. In 1955, he won second prize at the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. In 1956, he won first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels. He also shared first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1962.
