He is known for playing with incredible precision. This means he plays every small note and decoration perfectly. He often chooses to perform solo concerts instead of playing with a large orchestra. He likes to play the same pieces many times in different cities. This helps him understand the music in a very deep way. He plays music from many different eras and styles. His songs include works by Bach and Mozart up to modern writers like Arapov.

Learning to play at a high level takes many years of hard work. Sokolov began his studies when he was only five years old. At age seven, he entered a special school for children. He studied with a teacher named Leah Zelikhman. Later, he continued his training at the Leningrad Conservatory with Moisey Khalfin. By the time he was twelve, he was already performing in Moscow. He played music by many famous names like Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. This early training helped him become a master of the instrument.

Sokolov became a star very early in his life. In 1966, he entered the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. He was only sixteen years old when he won the gold medal. This made him the youngest person ever to win that prize. Some people were surprised by his win at such a young age. Even though he was successful, his global career changed over time. He traveled to places like Japan and Finland to perform for audiences. He has since become a very famous figure in concert halls across Europe.

His journey has not always been easy due to world events. During the Cold War, it was difficult for people to travel between countries. A war in Afghanistan caused a break in ties between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Because of this, some of his scheduled tours in America were cancelled. During the breakup of the Soviet Union, he stayed in Russia to play. He later gained Spanish nationality in August of 2022. Today, he still travels a great deal to share his music with the world.

If you want to hear his music, you can listen to his many recordings. He has worked with different music companies over the years. He used to release music on a label called Opus 111. Later, he worked with Melodiya and now with Deutsche Grammophon. In 2015, he released a special two-CD set from a recital in Salzburg. This recording included music by Mozart, Chopin, and Bach. These recordings allow people to hear his careful and beautiful playing from home.
