He was born in Leningrad in 1950. He began playing the piano at age five. By age seven, he went to a special school. He studied with teachers named Leah Zelikhman and Moisey Khalfin. At age sixteen, he won a gold medal. This was at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. He was the youngest winner ever.

Sokolov is known for playing with great care. People love his precise way of playing. He plays music by many writers. These include Bach, Chopin, and Mozart. He often plays solo concerts. He likes to play the same songs many times. This helps him understand the music deeply.

His life as a traveler has had some hard times. During the Cold War, it was hard to travel. A war in Afghanistan caused a break in ties between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This meant some of his tours were cancelled. He is now a citizen of Spain. He still tours many places in Europe. He also makes music recordings for companies like Deutsche Grammophon.
