Yevgeny Mravinsky was a great music leader. He was a conductor and a piano player. He also taught music at a school called the Leningrad Conservatory.

Mravinsky led the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra for a long time. He started this job in 1938. Under his lead, the group became famous all over the world. He was known for playing Russian music. He often led the world premiere of new works. This means he led the very first time people heard them. He worked closely with the composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Mravinsky led the first plays of many Shostakovich symphonies.

When he led an orchestra, he had a very calm look. He often used his hands to lead instead of a baton. A baton is a thin stick used by conductors. He wanted to feel the mood of the music. He called this "atmospherization."

His music was very powerful. One critic said his orchestra played like a wild horse. They only stayed in check because of his strong will. Mravinsky toured many places. He went to Finland, Japan, and the United Kingdom. He died in 1988 at the age of 84.
