People go there to study, train, and research music. You might find students learning to play instruments or sing beautifully. Some students learn how to write new music, which is called composition. Others learn how to lead a group of musicians, called conducting. There are even people who study music history or the rules of music, called theory. These schools help people turn their love for sound into a real skill.

There are many different ways to attend a music school. Some children go to specialized schools like the Purcell School.

Others join after-school programs, such as the El Sistema program in Venezuela. This program uses special centers called núcleos to give free lessons. For older students, there are many types of higher education. Some are called music academies, like the Sibelius Academy. Others are called conservatories, such as the New England Conservatory.

In Rome, the schola cantorum might be the first recorded music school. This group included monks, clergy, and boys. Later, the Wells Cathedral School in England was founded in 909 AD. It still teaches musicians today. The Notre Dame school in the 12th century was also very important for making new kinds of music.

In the 16th century, the word "conservatory" had a different meaning in Italy.

These were often places attached to hospitals for orphans. The word comes from the idea of "saving" children through music. In Naples, many famous schools started during this time. One school, Sant'Onofrio a porta Capuana, was founded in 1578. It was the first conservatory in the world. These Italian schools eventually inspired music schools in cities like London, Paris, and Vienna.

Today, music schools connect students to a huge world of art.

You can find them in almost every part of the globe. Some students join a music department at a large university. Others go to a college of music, like the Berklee College of Music. Many specialist schools help children with great talent through auditions. This helps them prepare for careers in music, dance, or drama. Whether it is a small local academy or a huge conservatory, these schools keep music alive.
