A music school is a specialized institution for the study, training, and research of music.

These institutions serve many purposes for different types of learners. Some focus on the performance of musical instruments or singing. Others prioritize musical composition, which is the act of writing new music. Students may also study conducting, which involves leading an orchestra or choir. Beyond performance, many schools offer academic research in fields like musicology, music history, and music theory. These subjects help students understand the rules and the past of musical art.

Instruction occurs across many different educational levels and settings. Some children receive music training within the compulsory general education system. Others attend specialized children's music schools, such as the Purcell School. In Venezuela, the El Sistema program provides free after-school instruction through centers called núcleos.

Higher education institutions use many different names. They might be called a music academy, like the Sibelius Academy. They could be a music faculty, such as the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Some are known as a college of music, like the Berklee College of Music. Others use the term conservatory, such as the New England Conservatory.

Music education has roots that stretch back through many centuries. While the earliest history is speculative, some scholars look to ancient traditions. In the biblical tradition, some suggest the prophet Samuel may have led a school for sacred-rite musicians.

The schola cantorum in Rome may be the first recorded music school. This group was a guild of monks, secular clergy, and boys. In 909 AD, the Wells Cathedral School was founded in England to educate choristers. It continues to teach instrumentalists today. Later, the Saint Martial school in France became an important center for composition. It was a precursor to the famous Notre Dame school in the 12th century.

The Notre Dame school was vital for developing polyphonic music. Polyphonic music involves multiple independent melodies played at once. This school helped this style gain international circulation.

During the Renaissance, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia was founded in Rome. It was established by a papal bull issued by Sixtus V in 1585. This institution grew from a religious guild into an acclaimed academy for scholarship and performance. The term "conservatory" actually began in 16th-century Italy. At that time, conservatori were often attached to hospitals to care for orphans. These orphans were "saved" through musical education, which gave the term its name.

Naples became a major center for music education during the 16th to 18th centuries.

Several conservatories operated there, including Sant'Onofrio a porta Capuana, founded in 1578. This was the first conservatory in the world. Other schools included I poveri di Gesù Cristo and Santa Maria di Loreto. These institutions helped develop the Scuola Musicale Napoletana. Famous educators like Alessandro Scarlatti and Francesco Durante worked in these settings. The Naples model, which featured free tuition and competitive exams, was copied across Europe. Cities like Paris, London, and Vienna eventually established similar systems.

As the 19th century progressed, music schools expanded globally. In 1862, Anton Rubinstein founded a conservatory in Saint Petersburg. His brother Nikolai founded one in Moscow in 1866.

By the late 1800s, music education reached the Americas in cities like Rio de Janeiro, Boston, and Buenos Aires. In the 1940s, advanced training began to organize in parts of Africa and Asia. Today, specialized music schools help children with exceptional potential. These schools often require a competitive audition for entry. Students may study at a specialist music unit within a larger school. As they progress, they often spend more time on music and less on academic subjects.

Modern music education connects many different fields of study. Some institutions are broader and cover the performing arts, including drama and dance.

Tertiary-level institutions often have pre-college divisions for younger students. These junior departments might offer lessons in orchestra, chamber music, and music technology. This allows children to prepare for professional life while still attending regular school. Whether through a large university music department or a private academy, these schools preserve musical traditions. They ensure that the skill of making music is passed from one generation to the next.
