He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists in history. He earned international acclaim for his unique interpretations of classical music. Many experts believed he was a peerless performer of Frédéric Chopin's works. Rubinstein performed in public for eight decades. His massive repertoire included composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Liszt. He also played works by Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, and Schumann. To Rubinstein, music was not just a career. He described it as being as natural as an arm or a leg.

Rubinstein possessed extraordinary mental abilities that aided his musical mastery. He had a photographic memory for musical scores. This allowed him to visualize the physical pages of a score in his mind. He could even recall specific details, like a coffee stain on a page, while playing. His aural abilities, or hearing, were also exceptionally developed. He could play entire symphonies inside his head. He once noted that he could listen to a Brahms symphony in his mind during breakfast. He could continue that mental performance for thirty minutes while doing other tasks.

His musical education followed a prestigious pedagogical lineage. As a young student, he studied with Karl Heinrich Barth in Berlin. Barth had been a pupil of Franz Liszt. Liszt himself had been taught by Carl Czerny. Czerny had been a pupil of Ludwig van Beethoven. This chain of teachers connected Rubinstein directly to the masters of the past. Even as a child, his talent was obvious. The famous violinist Joseph Joachim was impressed by the four-year-old Rubinstein. Joachim even offered to supervise his artistic education when he was ready for serious study.

Rubinstein's early life was shaped by his family in Łódź, Poland.

He was born on January 28, 1887, to a Jewish family. His father owned a small textile factory. His name was actually chosen by his eight-year-old brother. The brother wanted him to be named Artur after a neighbor who played the violin well. By age two, Rubinstein showed absolute pitch. This means he could identify musical notes perfectly. By age four, he was recognized as a child prodigy. He gave his first public debut at age seven, playing Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn.

His professional career involved constant travel and many different musical homes. He moved to Berlin at age ten to continue his studies. In 1904, he moved to Paris to launch his career. There, he met composers like Maurice Ravel and Paul Dukas. He made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 1906.

During World War I, he lived in London. He found a musical community in the Chelsea salon of Paul and Muriel Draper. He also toured Spain and South America between 1916 and 1917. These tours inspired a lifelong love for composers like Enrique Granados and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Rubinstein's life included periods of deep personal struggle and historical tragedy. In 1908, he faced extreme poverty in Berlin. He was hounded by creditors and nearly evicted from his hotel. During this difficult time, he made a failed attempt to end his life. He later described this moment as feeling "reborn" with a love for life. He also experienced profound grief during World War II. Most of his family members in Poland were killed during the Holocaust. Because of his experiences in Germany during the war, he refused to play there again. He famously joked that he would only play in places that were not Tibet or Germany.

In his later years, Rubinstein became a naturalized United States citizen in 1946.

He lived in Los Angeles and provided piano soundtracks for several films. He was also a talented chamber musician. He partnered with many great artists, including the Guarneri Quartet and Pablo Casals. His eyesight eventually began to fail in the mid-1970s. He retired from the stage in May 1976 at age 89. His final concert was held at London's Wigmore Hall. This was the same venue where he had performed nearly 70 years earlier.
