His career spanned many decades and many different musical styles.

Richter's musical foundation was unique because he was largely self-taught. His father, Teofil, was a professional pianist, organist, and composer.

Teofil provided his son with a basic musical education. A Czech harpist also contributed to his early learning. Even as a young boy, Richter was an excellent sight-reader. This means he could read and play new music with great speed. By the age of 15, he was already working at the Odessa Opera. He spent his time accompanying musical rehearsals for the company.

Formal training for Richter began later in his life. In 1937, he moved to the Moscow Conservatory to study with Heinrich Neuhaus. Neuhaus was a famous piano teacher who taught many great musicians. During his audition, Richter performed Beethoven's Sonata No. 28 and his own compositions. Neuhaus was so impressed that he called Richter a genius. The teacher even remarked that Richter was the special pupil he had waited for his whole life. Although Richter tried composing music early on, he eventually gave up the practice. He believed there was no need to add more bad music to the world.

Richter's personal life was marked by significant hardship and privacy. He was born in Zhytomyr, located in the Russian Empire and modern-day Ukraine.

During the Civil War, his family was separated from him. He lived with his aunt Tamara, who taught him how to paint. In 1941, his father was arrested and sentenced to death for espionage. This period caused a long separation between Richter and his mother. Later in life, he lived with the operatic soprano Nina Dorliak. She was a constant companion and supported him through his career and his final illness.

Richter achieved massive international success through touring and recordings. In 1949, he won the Stalin Prize, which led to tours in China and Eastern Europe. His recordings of Prokofiev in 1958 helped introduce his talent to the United States. In 1960, he performed in Chicago and created a major sensation. That performance earned him a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance.

He also traveled to Japan eight times. Because he disliked flying, he traveled to Japan by ship and railway through Siberia.

As a performer, Richter had many distinct habits and preferences. He established a music festival at La Grange de Meslay in France. In his later years, he often preferred playing in small, darkened halls. He would use only a small lamp to light his musical score. This allowed the audience to focus entirely on the music. He did not want people to notice his facial expressions or movements. He wanted the sound to be the most important thing in the room.

Richter's legacy remains connected to the broader world of classical music. He was a jury member for the first Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958. During that event, he gave the performer Van Cliburn a perfect score of 25. Richter was also a man of principle who defied authorities to perform at a funeral. His life and his music continue to be studied by musicians today.
